Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is an another installment in the perfect soccer simulation series developed by the Tokyo branch of Konami (in Japan, the game is known as Winning Eleven 10). In comparison to its predecessor, the game features several improvements in terms of its new functionalities as well as the gameplay mechanics, and the original teams.

Mechanics

This installment has introduced new licensed national teams, such as the Netherlands, England, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as clubs such as Bayern Munchen and Manchester United. For the first time in the series, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 features the International Challenge Mode (an equivalent of the World Cup), which allows players to acquire the most precious soccer trophy for their favorite team.

The gameplay of the PC, PS2 and X360 release of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 resembles those featured in the fourth installment of the series. In comparison to its predecessor, the game described herein is more dynamic and features fewer interruptions by the referee’s whistle. Dribbling animations are quite impressive – now they are much faster and more spectacular. The free kick features now a new functionality allowing a player to perform this fragment of the game faster without losing precious seconds, which an opponent might use to modify his team. Moreover, the matches are even more attractive thanks to the additional animations, such as a goalkeeper touching the crossbar when the ball goes over the goal. All these novelties result in better representation of the soccer matches.

Technical aspects

Perfect gameplay is supplemented with equally good 3D visuals identical to those featured in the previous installment of the series. Minor texture corrections resulted in more realistic soccer players’ faces. New licenses have increased the number of soccer celebrities (including the Dutch team). In terms of its audio layer, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 delivers slightly improved commentary.

The most exciting are the multiplayer matches. In front of one screen, a player can face seven opponents, while online up to four players can play against each other. The latter option is now much more polished, thus playing on online servers does not feature lags typical for previous installments. Additionally, Konami did not forget about the ranking systems and online tournaments.

Konami’s Winning Eleven games have never been able to boast the official licenses and superb presentation that are such integral parts of many other sports games, and as result the series has earned its great reputation solely on the strength of its realistic gameplay. World Soccer Winning Eleven 8 International not only marks the first time that (an unfortunately limited number of) licensed club teams have appeared in a Winning Eleven game, but also the first time that the series has appeared on the Xbox. Released in Europe as Pro Evolution Soccer 4 toward the end of last year, World Soccer Winning Eleven 8 International is undoubtedly Konami’s best soccer game to date, thanks to a number of quite dramatic improvements made both on and off the field.
